The Privileged Planet

The Privileged Planet is the one-hour Intelligent Design movie that gives their perspective of cosmology. The first 50 minutes are fairly benign and, I think, reasonably accurate (any cosmologists want to set anything straight?). The last 10 minutes clearly point out that all of the wonders of the universe are the result of some sort of creator.

I recommend watching the movie if only to understand the mindset of the ID movement. However, keep in mind the following:

1. They look at the outcome (complex life on earth) and then show how improbable it is that so many things happened to allow us to be here. The main fallacy is that all these things happened because we are the desired outcome. The reality is the other way around. Because these things happened, we are one possible outcome.

2. Self-importance. Over and over again they assume that everything is done for us. That we are the organisms which the whole universe was created for.

Ohhh, Canada....

As a resident in Ontario, I must hang my head in shame.

Ontario's Premier Dalton McGuinty questioned why the "Lord's Prayer" is still being recited to open every session of the Ontario Parliament. Of course, Christians went nuts! The Premier simply thought it was time to re-examine this in light of our diverse population and religious/non-religious groups. It looked like the christian Lord's Prayer was about to be scrapped!

But, alas, no (from the Toronto Star):

Under the new arrangement, the traditional Christian prayer will continue to be read each morning with other prayers rotated daily... the Speaker (will) commence each meeting day of the Assembly by reciting the Lord’s Prayer, followed by another prayer, or the presentation of a verse or passage, or call for a moment of silent reflection, or any such other similar activity which, in the opinion of the Speaker, will serve to reflect over time the general demographic composition of this chamber and of the province of Ontario.

As depressing as this decision was, it gets worse:

The motion, passed by a vote of 58-0

None of the elected members had the guts to oppose this?!?

Are people REALLY this stupid?

At least two people were scammed for $176,000 when they believed that the blank paper they received was really chemically-altered money that could be restored by using another chemical.

Ok, so, the money wasn't a clever confeit: it was blank. BLANK!

Who could possibly be so stupid to 'have faith' in blank money...?
